What are Prescription Orthotics?

Prescription orthotics are medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance.  Orthotics work on the feet in the same way braces work on the teeth – by exerting gentle consistent pressure to bring muscles, ligaments and bones back into proper alignment.

The overwhelming majority of lower limb problems, and a fair number of lower back, knee, and hip complaints, are caused by abnormal biomechanics of the foot.  A large percentage of these problems can be successfully treated with shoe inserts – called orthotics.

How Custom Orthotics Work

“Your feet are the foundation of your body.” A normal foot functions much as a tire on a car to assure a smooth, safe ride and acts as a shock absorber on various terrains.  If the foot or tire wears on one side or develops irregularities, that ride can become uneven, and eventually unpleasant – the entire body, or car can go out of alignment.

If the foot fails to function adequately, other parts of the body, such as shins, knees, hips and lower back have to take up the slack, and this added stress would eventually result in early wear and tear to their joints.

Your feet are under enormous stress and strain. If for any reason your arches lose their ability to flex and return to their normal shape, your feet will no longer be able to effectively absorb the shock of walking. If you were to drive a car which was out of alignment, or drive over a dirt road without shock absorber, the stress and strain over time would damage other parts of the car. In the same way, your body will suffer from problems starting from your feet. Foot orthotics do help to reduce stress and strain which are the causes of common foot and knee pain.
